Candace Couse

Predominantly working with installation and video, Candace Couse is a visual artist exploring issues surrounding space, place, and the body. Her work examines the basic human need to acquire territory as a prerequisite to identity, as well as the loss of security and anxiety that comes with disorientation. Couse earned a Bachelor of Visual Arts at Brock University with Honours, and a Master of Fine Art at the University of Calgary. Her professional background includes: five years’ experience with management; arts co-ordination and administration; over five years’ experience in education/teaching; leading workshops; research; and an active role as a practicing artist at the national and international level for eight years. 

 

A 2012 finalist for the Primio Arte Laguna, an international competition  organized by the Cultural Association MoCA (Modern Contemporary Art) and Art Laguna Couse's  work was  exhibited at the Institute Romeno of Culture and Humanistic Research in Venice. Other highlights of Couse's professional art practice include: Finalist, Kingston Prize, 2013; Recipient of The Italian Cultural Association MoCA, in collaboration with Arte Laguna art prize (artist in residence), 2012; Artfunkl residency prize, Manchester, UK, 2013;  Iaab residency, Basel, Switzerland, August-December, 2012; Toronto Film Festival (TUFF) 2013 winner, Special Jury Prize; Vancouver Asian Film Festival (VAFF) Selection, 2012;  Ottawa International Animation Festival Showcase Selection, 2012; She has had the honour of writing and directing a short film with The National Film Board of Canada titled Sick/Malade; as well as numerous gallery shows across Canada, the USA, UK, Switzerland and Italy. http://www.candacecouse.net/
